Tony, outstanding carving! I think 'Hawkeye' is an excellent name for this one. I'm so impressed with your carving ability and how life like your mountain man has become. Please do more.

You take your time and it surely pays off. You did a nice job of his whiskers that follow his jaw line...that's a struggle for me. The hair has a soft look to it which is not easy to capture. His other features are right on. I'm impressed with Mark's work as well and you can see where you have studied some of his style ie. nose and brow. Super job Tony.

Thanks again everyone.

I guess not having much free time to carve can be an advantage for me in that I spend a lot of time in between sessions looking at pictures of my own progress for each piece. I set the most current picture as background on my desktop on both my laptop and PC at work. That way I can figure out what I’m liking and not liking and sort of plan out the next 30-45 minute session. During the winter months I was able to get maybe 5-8 hrs a week on the Indian mask, this one seems more like 2-4 hrs per week. In fact I’ve gotten so busy, at work and home, lately that I haven’t carved in nearly two weeks. That’s why I went ahead and posted this as “finished” even though it really isn’t done yet.

For the next four months work will be crazy busy, I’m off to Seattle for the next four days to the Northwest Monument Builders convention, my wife wants to renovate our fifty plus year old kitchen (it’s do) & dining room, finish replacing the main floor windows (5 down 10 to go) reside and paint the exterior, replace the gutters, finish pulling out the back deck and pour a new concrete patio, go to the coast for a week in August, 5 days camping at the gorge on the Columbia River for Creation Fest in July.
So carving time will be even more rare for me but I’ll find time, as my wife would like a carving of Christ, my daughter (& wife) wants Jack Sparrow, a good friend wants a salmon for his “fisherman” son, my insurance agent wants a Mt. man or Indian mask and a cabinet maker friend came in yesterday and wants me to start etching mirrors for him.
Oh yeah if the wind is blowing a nice steady 2-8 mph I like to fly dual line sport kites (trick kites) performing slack line tricks…its how I unwind (no pun intended) so got to work that in too.

I’ll post what I can when I can and keep watching the rest of you turn out some great work.
