Doris, You have a great start on an exciting carving. The form seems to be taking shape nicely. This one will be fun to watch. Thanks for taking the time to share it with us. If I can get a pattern worked out I may try a wip thread. I know it takes a lot of effort so thank you! Jim OH |

thank you all, it is really MY pleasure sharing wip with you. it does not feel like effort at all, just pure fun... yes, jim, if you feel like doing a wip thread, that will be great, we all love watching those, me too :-) bonnie, thanks ! yes, i know what you mean with feel my movements in wood, i often have this too when watching wip threads :-) russl, i agree this is a very good quote, not only for carving. we do learn all from the "changes in design" we make, and next time it will be going more towards the direction intended...also, i noticed, that very often mishapenings in carvings friends do not see (i can tell if they are just polite to not point out, or really do not realise mistake), i am always amazed by that... thor, hello :-) oh, i think we all love mary poppins, doŽnot we ? :-) ... i admired your big house project over on the other thread. wonderful :-) mark, hi :-) ...i see you spotted the traces i left, where i was already tempted to add detail. thanks for reminding me to think form first...i think it was on chris pyes site, where i read, he is always amazed when beginners start carving the eyes of a head first, even on the flat plane on the square block...this made me chuckle, but i try to keep that in mind. only, details are so very tempting...about the paper pattern, i tried several times, since i see here on forum so many people apply this method successfully. to me it not works. dont know why. the wire puppet i made, did work, even though its really nothing like the carving looks now already, but it did tell me things i needed know before start. i think, people have different ways to understand things they see. thats why we do have differnt aproaches. to me a paper pattern is something flat, and hinders my vision of the 3d piece, but i understand how it can work as a great guide, giving essential proportions and important markings on the carving... thank you all for your confidence in my carving mary poppins. this helps me a lot :-)

hi forrest :-) ... me, mary poppins ? lol, but yes a little i think is right ... carvings tell, and you can read them... thanks for compliment ... looks like she is taking forever,i cant carve so much as i want...but here is new update. i think i have the big shapes now where i want them. have put in her arms (next time i really need think (!!) before i start carving in design already where all the difficult to reach places are, and maybe avoid some of them...mary poppins has so many difficult to reach areas, sigh...)... and i made squarry blobs for her hands so that i can see where thumb and fingers go about... otherwise i mainly cut body more to shape. and neck. had so much trouble with that, it did not wanted sit centered, lol, but i think is now about ok, do you agree ?

| Hello Doris, Yes, I can see her coming out.... looks just great. I know what you mean about your modelling clay - plastilin, I used to play with it as a kid; it is very soft and you cannot really work any details into it, also, when you push somewhere, the whole piece moves, it sure adds a lot of frustration. But as Mark said, the important thing is the form not the details. She looks really good, very nice lines - and a lot of work to do. I am sure you are enjoying the progress, let us see soon. Fred |

You have got to be having so much fun with this carving. She already makes me smile when I look at her. I know what you mean about designing something with hard to reach places....I wonder if our "more experienced" carvers still fall into that trap?

Hi Doris, Mary is definitely starting to come though. It's hard not to want to jump right into detail, when you know the large shapes have to be first. Given your excellent ability for carving your Mary Poppins is going to be just great. Smile Watching for the next update. Kathy
