I just finished a letter opener. I had a scrap piece of wood and wanted to try to do something with it so this is what I came up with. It's not your typical letter opener with the long blade but I think it will work just fine. It is bass wood with four coats of polyurethane. I shaped the handle similar to many of the carving knives except shorter. I remember the first time I saw a carving knife and thought it looked odd, but when I held it I thought it felt really good. I know opening a letter is faster than carving a block of wood but I thought it would work out here to. I'm going to give it to my Dad since I haven't carved him anything before. That is very pretty. I actually like the shape of the blade and handle. It has a worry stone quality to it. Very comfortable to hold.

Excellent work. Great symmentry! It's hard to keep everything it line when a carving is that thin and long!
