Nice work there espeically for your first wood spirit, now you have the carving bug. Just watch out for those digits, those carving tools have no heart just sharp edges. I know first hand!

You should have seen my earlier wood spirits ....you did verrrrry well for this being your first one. Each time you do one you'll add a little more from what you've learned, and soon you'll be an expert like your father
You've got great symetry with the features and good depth so you will find it easy with your next one.
Something I learned here on the board from feedback from our helpful friends - try a large gouge for the mustache and beard before you use your V tool. Make your lines more irregular and vary the depth. I think you'll find it will give your carving a more natural look. Having said that, your's is fine as is. It's just another technique to consider. Glad you enjoyed your first woodspirit.

Excellent first woodspirit you did a great job. Much better than my first one. As Patrick said the symetry in the face is really good. The only thing I would add and this is strictly constructive critisism is to make the hair in the beard and mostache more curved instead of straight. I call is a slow S curve. Patrick is right also use a U gouge before the V gouge and vary the depth of the cuts. Having said all that not picking it apart at all it is an excellent carving. I was going to post my first one but thought better of it.

Now Dad, don't be too critical! Every carver has to have a first try. Mine first spirit has a nose like Rocky Marciano's! Your boy's look's good in comparison!
