Hello Doris,

I haven't chatted with you for some time. You've got a very nice female carving there. It's fine as is but your looking for feedback, or other carver's perspectives. As for the eyebrows, I use a small gouge and gradually move from the inside of the eye out...moving slowly up to give a fullness to the eye lid. The eyebrow starts to take shape as a result of forming the eyelid.
As for sanding - I only sand the female, mostly to give them a youthful look. I attached a pic of a small female I did a while ago to illustrate how I approached the brow and to show the results of sanding.
Your carving has a lot of character and looks fine the way you left it.
Patrick

Doris,

I am certainly no expert and, as such, would probably leave well enough alone because it looks great as it is. However, I liked what Patrick had to say about creating the eyebrow as a result of giving fullness to the eyelid. If you were to do that, I would also suggest rounding the top portion of the nose a bit, from the bridge up to the brow. It looks a little squared-off and you would be able to smooth that out at the same time you created the eyebrows. I personally would leave it alone and use that as information for my next carving (otherwise, I'd probably end up ruining it). Great job!

Mark

hi thank you all, and specially patrick for information....i will not touch this carving anymore, for once since i think i cannot improve it...but, your information will help me n next carvings, and be assured i will atleast try it ... i am not in sanding, and most of time, i am not interested in presenting youth. i am not against that, but since i am more middleage now...sigh...i am interested in different things. and, to me at least, age has something inteesting in itself, not about beuaty to see immediately, but somehow beauty from within...whoops. ah well, you can see in my carving my attidtude anyway...thanks a lot patrick, i keep your information, and will try it on next carvings...if it is not too much asking, could i see please a very closeup of the eyearea ?, i am more a visual learner than with text...

Hi Doris,
She's lovely. She wears her age, and your tool marks compliment what I have read that you are purposely trying to achieve.
Well done, and I look forward to seeing the next one.
Thor

Doris,

Sorry but I don't have a close up of the eyes of any of my female carvings, and the one's I have carved are now with other carving admirers. I'll keep this in mind the next time I do a female face.

Doris,
After finally having time to browse a few websites, I looked at yours. I'm afraid I should be asking you for advice. You certainly have an abundance of talent. I can carve caricatures fairly good but realistic people and animal carvings leave me at a loss. I do admire your work and thank you so much for sharing it. I primarily go for humor in my carvings and enjoy that aspect a lot. Please keep up the great work,
Jim OH
