i don't see her as such a young woman and sanding would take away from the feeling i'm getting or the earthyness. Feb

MA, burning and carving is not the same as playing with matches and knives.

Well, I'll be surprised if anyone agrees with me but that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it! I may be wrong(Iwas once, you know)

I think its an outstanding carving....the line from the corner of the eye to below the cheekbone bothers me tho.....and I have to agree....I would sand it...but what do I know?

;-) ... hey thanks, your discussion give joy to me... well, i belong, as doug mentioned, to carvers who not like to sand. too dusty...i appreciate however carvings which are sanded, when it adds to the carving...

in my case, this carving is not about young woman, but more women my age, which means some where middle-age, and it is more about a feeling, an emotional state. and, i am sure, this would vanish, if i would sand it... to me, these rough marks (wich i could have carved smother if i wanted to) do tell part of the story... i may be wrong, but i really think as she is now, is closest to what i wanted her be...though i see many things i would have liked to achieve better, but smoothing her is not one of these ...

thanks for looking so closely, and saying opinion, in particular doug. i really appreciate. to me, there is no right or wrong in carving... only what counts is what we want achieve.

Doris ,
I think you did a very good job on achieving most of what you wanted. The age of the woman is well into 50's early 60's. She shows being tired and a life of long hours and hard work.

She reminds me of the pictures of the American depression of the 1930's. If you want it is possible to bring the eye brows back up, but since you have the finish on you most likely do not want to cut through it.

Because you used a file to put in the eyebrows, you did not remove as much wood as you thought, the pressure from the file depressed the wood instead of removing it, so it showed a greater detail, and type of finish would have eased the pressure on the wood. The reason a hacksaw or a vtool or small gouge works is because the wood being removed it can not relax back into place simply because it is gone.

Well done and again your training and talent shows.
