No ,,this isn't woodcarving as such,,just a WIP that I am having fun with.
I was commissioned to build an outdoor planter for a church in Phila. It's 4 ft square,,32 inches deep and has to be mobile for use in their Memorial Garden. I designed it to match teak furniture they have there. Now the surface where this is going ( terrazo marble over the entire area) is not perfectly level over the entire area. So one of the other things I designed into it is it would have the ability to level itself wherever they decide to put it. This way as they have events in this area ( art shows,,brunches etc. ) they can move it around as a decoration or center piece and it will never look out of place.
All the teak I showed not long ago I glued up to make the panels ( 4 ft.X 32 in) as well as the design on the outside. This frame that I designed as well is the "guts" of the whole thing. Each caster is rated for 600+ lbs and are attached to the base frame, two fixed, two steering as well as locking and rubber coated wheels. The upper frame is hinged at one side,,the other can be raised by screw jack made out of acme threaded rod. And to this upper frame is what the panels will be fastened to.Access panels will be hinged along the locking wheel side to access the locks. So once it's in place and you move it around to various places,,all you do is twist the hidden screw jacks and you level out the entire planter. I also had the whole piece powder coated to prevent rust.
Like I said,,not carving,,but a fun simple puzzle to figure out. And if they want to pay me to make a planter,,who am I to argue?
The sketch from the original proposal will be changed slightly from the picture. This pattern was taken from the teak benches,,but doesn't fit into this design the way I want it to. And the one pic is only showing two panels set in the general location and are not fixed at this time. Once the four panels are installed,,wood slats will cross the bottom,,and I'm using flexible pool liner to make the actual planting area inside of it to hold the planting soil. Cool huh?
Fantastic Mark! Thanks for including the drawing really helped me visualize how this will turn out. This just shows how versatile your wood working skills really are. Hope we get to see the finished product.
Kathy
It's strips applied to the surface to make the pattern. Very simple and straight forward. Nothing fancy with this one,,no carving so I don't think it really belongs here,,but an interesting job with different challenges.Thought someone might get a kick out of it.
OK...That makes sense now! If those were cutouts, I was wondering how you'd hide the pool liner. Having them on top makes perfect sense!
While it's not exactly carving, it is woodworking...so there's a place for it here! The problem-solving steps you went through can apply to many projects, and I can envision a carved planter using similar techniques!
Yes..for some reason even though WORK is a four letter word,,I still prefer to have fun doing it. Somehow I always manage that.
Edison N.J.,, Just Carving,,,You aren't all that far from me.I get out to Newark quite often for wine runs and visit some good restaurants around Westfield.
Yep, Westfield is two towns over from the north end of Edison. I'm in the south end wedged between Metuchen to the north and Highland Park to the south--two small towns. New Brunswick is a city south of Highland Park.
One of these days, I hope to meander over to PA to stir up some trouble! LOL
Not quite done,,just an update. In the first pic you can see the general shape of the planter now and the applied designs. I still have to finish adding blocks to the top of the corner posts and they get a little shape to them,,sort of a ball look.
The second shot you can see how the screw jacks elevate the piece so it can sit level on an inclined surface.
third,,an inside shot of the jacks. Here too,,I need to add the framework for the floor of the piece and then add the liner.
Fourth,,this is the side with the locking wheels,,I made a hidden access panel to get to the locks
Fifth,,here is the panel open to get at the wheels.
