I know what you mean Smokey the weather is hard on the outside carvings, the ones I can not take in I cover with burlap and then Plastic nobody see them here anyway they are covered with snow.
But the pressure washer should do it or somebody suggested sand blasting.
Use for your finish a Paint Base coat #4 or 5 it looks milky in the can but dries beautiful clear and I have had very good luck for my outside carvings.
The paint people will think you are nuts when you ask for it ,but give them a stick and let them try it right there and you will see. :-))
