Starting my 4th Indian and not to sure where I am going with this but if I can get out of my head into this piece of wood, it should be different from what I have been doing. Some pics along the way. Vince

It appears from the wood you left up top that he's going to have a mohawk style hair cut....am I right? Patrick |

Pattrick, No it is not going to be his hair. It is going to be a head piece that is made of porquipine guard hair and deer tail hair. There are many different styles of these depending on what tribe they are from. Not all tribes have these but most of them do have one of one form or another. I am hoping that this one is of the plains style. I will try to post a pic of one. Vince

Not much more but you can see where I am starting to outline the hair. The piece on his head is what most people call a Roach (NOT the bug). the Sioux call it a Wapesha. Most people think that Indians all had a feathered headdress or just had a feather in there hair but these are probably the most common thing that most of them would wear. The chiefs had the big feathered headdress. In the old days they had to earn feathers by doing a great thing. I am still looking for pics of one and as soon as I can find one I will post it. Thanks for looking. Vince

Starting to work on the neck. This is one part that always gives me a hard time. But it does keep getting a little more easy each time I do one. Vince

Your moving along quickly Vince. Excuse my ignorance suggesting that the top looked to be shaping as a Mohawk style hair cut...I have seen photos in the past that had that particular style of headdress. Your photo shows him with a long neck...which could be just the photo. You may want to start fanning the neck area out earlier to keep everything in proportion. Everything else looks right on. He has strong character showing in his face. You have inspired me to try my hand at doing a Native face in my next carving...perhaps in basswood. Patrick |

You have also inspired me to try another native it has been a while since I did one. Keep posting and thanks for sharing him with us. Colin

Nice work, I first thought the top was going to be a roach which many tribe wore. Waiting to see how you accomplish your top. Great showing so far.
