hi kathy, hi fred :-) ... oh, i hope i can really make it homage to mucha, fred, it is a challenge...yes, i noticed your avatar, it is inspired by one of mucha´s calender drawings, right ? ...

time for an update :-) ... have fixed where all the big shapes go, and started modeling the face, and hair... need to decide about the ear, i think i put the band over the ear, i want decorate that and being focal point rather than the inside of ear... and maybe i need put it a little different, it looks to angled i think... i hope you enjoy...

Hi Doris,
I just found this thread...the reference to Mucha caught my eye.... I have always been a huge fan of the art nouveau poster artists. Especially Mucha.
In fact, I am sitting in my computer room looking at 3 large reproduction posters of his on my wall and the piece you are doing....I did something like that a very long time ago in stained glass.

I am so excited to see how your piece turns out. Great subject and I know you will more than do it justice. Keep us posted.

susie, yes, mucha drawings are just beautiful, aren´t they :-). i would love to see the stained glass you did, do you have foto of it you like to share ?
jim, i am glad you enjoy watching the progress, i am too having big fun sharing these images :-)

i was very busily carving today, so again new update... i worked mainly the face area today. first pushed it down quite a bit, to get room for the ear. i decided to carve it as in my drawing, so the band running behind the ear, and i carved a little on the curly locks. they do look odd now, way to big and bold, but we will see, i hope my idea will work...

i worked now on the border elements, and learned meanwhile that my design is bad for carving. i have many places i hardly can reach with a chisel :-( ... it probably would work as bas relief, but i am doing it high relif, and the head is much in the way when carving on the border elements... need think next time i draw a design how i can carve that... lesson learned

so, i have a technical question : if there is a place i can reach with the chisel only to carve against the grain, how can i cut clean ? is this possible ?

Doris, she is beautiful....hang in there. I agree that a Mucha piece is very difficult to translate into a woodcarving. Going against the grain requires a very sharp tool and taking smaller bits of wood at a time. Pains taking work. But when you are done, this piece will stop folks dead in their tracks with the "wow" factor. I can't wait to see it.

ps. I will look for a picture of that stained glass piece and try to post it.

Your almost there Doris. Yes its difficult to get into those hard to reach spots and keep everything clean with your cuts. I'm struggle with this now with my gargoyle. I find veiners are good for cleaning up the crevices...then there are your bent tools which I have very few of. Someone here must have some suggestions for you.
