Default A Hobo Clown

My niece would like me to carve a slightly sad hobo clown for her boyfriend's birthday. So I thought I could do a WIP showing my progress. It will also give you the occasion to post some ideas or some things I didn't think of.

I used Dave Stetson Old man carving tutorial for the basic character because that's what inspires me the most, and I like the techniques he shows in his book.

I traced the outline of what I will need to cut to do the rought-out and should be able to cut it this week-end.

More to come. My deadline is Sept 6th for his birthday.

Btw, she would like the face to look just a bit sad, more like a worrying person than a crying one. And she want a round had with a flower on the hat, and a cigarette in his mouth. It's because his boyfriend likes to disguise like that just for the fun of it.

Very good so far Giles. Forgive my ignorance as I have never done a caricature or even a human subject, but, why do most carvers do the head seperately? I would have thought it would be easier in one? Like I said, no offence, I am a complete newbie at carving in general. Joe.

For this one, I want to make sure the head will be what my niece have in mind. I feel I can carve a body and be happy most of the time, but I'm not so sure about the faces. So that way, I will be able to carve another head without having to carve another body if I ever goof with the head...

As I said, she would like a melancholic face more than a sad one. So I could have to carve 2 and ask her to choose.

Lately, I began to do just that, carve a body and then carve a head from another piece of wood, and I begin to like that. I can also turn the head a little if I want.

Did you notice that many carvers also carve the hat separately on cowboy bodies? I may do that also for the hobo clown because I have a couple of ideas about the hat.

Thanks for asking,

Gilles

I made a change in my project today.

I will still carve the first design I posted, but for my niece, I decided to order a rough-out to make it easier. And also because I like the design of the carving to be carved with that rough-out from Wayne Shinlever.

But... I must add that I prefer the version from WoodBeeCarver

It seems like I am so busy these days that I won't have much time to carve for a while...

But I need and want to finish this one in time for a gift that niece would like to give to her boyfriend. So I work on it a bit every day.

Here is what I have so far. I wanted a flower, he is sentimental, a cigarette in his mouth for the cool look, and then I still need to work on a melancolic face, add more details, etc...

For now, the cigarette and the flower are not detailed because I want toask my niece about how she likes it so far.

Any comments or suggestions welcome... before I go further,

Gilles

Thanks a lot...

Btw, it won't have the clown look as I had in mind first, because my niece told me not to go that way too much, after I sent her some picture of real Hobo Clowns. So I am going more toward the Hobo look, but even then, without the worn clothes, only old maybe.
