| | Help with hair?? I am stuck again, I had a piece of Maple and I looked at it and it wanted to be an Mongolian Man, the face has sort of stringy hair parted from the centre and a long stringy thin beard . I have Googled and could not find a picture of any , does anybody know any sites with this kind of face?
I know how I want the eyes ,but how do I get the thin stringy look of hair?
Thanks for any help and suggestions

| | Re: Help with hair?? I think I would start by finding a couple of books or on-line tutorials about wood spirit carving. They seem to have tangles stringy hair. Should be some pictures on the forum of spirits folks have carved also. |

| | Re: Help with hair?? alice, yes put stringy hair in google images, and you see many examples. only i did not found on mongolian...
you can also look hair in different ways how i carve it, on my homepage. maybe the style i used on my selfportrait comes close to what you want ?
anyway, i think the carving of hair has always same idea behind it, not matter what style... first figure out how big shapes are. say about 3 or 5 sections. carve those loosely in. then divide each section into smaller ones, keeping the flow of hair in mind...then divide each of these again... for stringyness, you can use a small u-tool, or v-tool (might be better for male hair) and carve some lines indicating the single hairs...look on your hair how these lines flow. many paralele s-shpae lines, put not exact ones, and occasionally a crossing. makes look it natural...

| | Re: Help with hair?? Thank to all for your replies,
I did Google but none of the pictures came up what I had in mind thanks Doris for your googles but the beards are not what I see in my mind.
My husband tells me to close my eyes and do the beard the way I see it inside of my head. right.:-))) That is my biggest problem ,I see it in my head and then I try to carve it , sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

| | Re: Help with hair?? yes, was a shot in the dark my googled images... i like idea of your husband, with close eyes...maybe it also helps you to try draw what you see ? this i would do, it would fix your image of beard and hair even more for you, and you can easily work on a drawing so long you need to get it really right...and after that you have a reference picture you can use to carve :-) ...good luck, and be sure to show us your mogolian man when finished. i am curious to learn about your vision | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
