I think you have done a wonderful job. I posted pictures of my latest mask on the "works in progress" section of this site. I bend a stiff piece of wire in one continuous strand from the hairline to the transition from chin to throat. This serves as a profile gauge to work with so I don't lose the relationship between facial features and angles. I am new to carving, so I have developed several methods that work for me...

Your carving is as unique in it's representation of the female form as every individual. I wouldn't change a single thing!

I can't believe how smooth the mask looks. Here is an up-dated picture of my female after I treated her with oil. The crack starting at her forehead was disappointing. The tips I received from all the carvers really helped with the final steps to bring out her femininity...if that's a word. I may just cut out the back and try and salvage the face before the crack gets worst.

Nicely done Patrick. Don't worry about the crack, adds character. Wood is wood, you only have so much control. Beautiful work.

Irishman , I knew imediately it was a female.. and I am no one to say how to do anything when it comes to carving as I am just learning to carve, but I have sketched all my life and the only thing I can see is the jaw is too strong.. It looks masculine.. I am in agreement with some of the others that the chin could be shortened and made softer by rounding the sides after you shorten it.. My Dad was a photographer and he tried to install in me that a curved line is more pleasant to the eye than a straight line.. a few slight curves in the hair makes the female face look softer also.. I think you have done a great job , and these guy and gals on here can sure help us out... Charlotte

Yes, I agree with your analysis. I did make some adjustments with all the good feedback and I came to the point of acknowledging that this female has a strong jaw. Each time I attempt a female they get more feminine so your comments are well taken regarding her jaw. Once I get the female face down I plan on doing the female torso....then the fun starts all over again.
