well as most of you know being from my posts on this forum for the last 8 years that I am always leary of stepping out of my comfort zone. Funny most of us are its because the fear of the unknown. When I did tree stump carvings it was always woodspirit faces nothing else. Then when I go too old to carve tree's anymore I switched to Santa's. Most the same style again staying in my comfort zone. Well I have always had a passion for native art especially west coast art. So here I go, this is a carving just in its very rough stage done out of a single piece of basswood. All done with a knife and chisel so far and probably will end up all done that way. The carving is of Narasimgat a native of the West Coast Haida Gwai. One day as legend has it his wife was washing clothes at the shore when the killer whales grabbed her and took he to their kingdom in the ocean to become the wife of the chief of the killer whales. Narasimgat tracked her to their kingdom and snatched he away from the chief. This is my redition of the story inpired by a Steven Collison. The carving is very rough but wanted to show you its progression. Any comments nay or yea are as always welcome. Narasimgat is riding the killer whale and his wife is being carried in the killer whales mouth. Colin

That's going to be a fantastic carving, Colin. While I totally enjoy your many santa looks, I'm excited that you're venturing out into other carving areas. Always good to have a variety of carving interests. Thanks for the sneak preview--can't wait to see the finished product! Donna_T

I have found that roughing out a concept is one of the hardest parts of a new carving. You are a long way along and looking good. A story, such as this, makes a carving come alive. Looking forward to seeing more WIP pics.

It looks like a great start. Yep, Haida art is so rich and the style so appealing. It's hard to be a carver in Canada and not be influenced. Looking forward to seeing this evolve. Thanks Colin. Jay |
