| | a happy day ... well, my intention was to keep a memory of a very happy day, so this is a carving i made for myself :-) ... the most difficult part was the finish however, and the help i got here made me able to come up with something i like, though it is not completely what i intended (reason is, on try-out-wood it always looks a little different even though its from same tree...) ... i hope you like, and please leave your comments, on carving, or finish, so i can improve on next piece...
whoops, yes i should say, wood is linden, size is about 19cm high, finish is sequence of very very very thin layers of acrylics paints, followed by tung oil, followed by colored briwax... |

| | Re: a happy day ... I think you did an awesome job I like it very much. I’ve seen other people do the eyes like you did but to me they seem “blind” for lack of a better word. I like to see the iris and pupil carved out...it give the eyes more focus. Other then that he looks great. Great proportions and texture. |

| | Re: a happy day ... Doris,
Wonderful! He has a great look about him with a cheerful attitude expressed.
The story behind the day is probably wonderful.
I like the eyes done that way as they are such a classical approach for European carvings. You have evened out the finish very well by your methods of laying too.
Makes me wish I could see it in person.

| | Re: a happy day ... Well done Doris. You did a great job on your last portrait but I think there is some improvement on this one. So this is a portrait in memory of a happy day....well I have a number of guesses for that one. Is this your significant other you've carved (which might explain the happy day you wish to remember) or a portrait from your imagination?
Not sure what to give you feedback on as its your carving and your technique. If there was something particular you are not pleased with, perhaps we could give you some suggestions.

| | Re: a happy day ... Excellent,,,very nicely done Doris! You show a very deft hand and eye.Your progress isn't incremental,,it's leaps and bounds.Within the strength of the carving is a subtleness,,the pose,,musculature, structure, details without there being anything overriding. This piece speaks volumes in very sublime ways, a great piece to study for many reasons. |

| | Re: a happy day ... Nice piece of carving Doris, I would be very happy with it. A bit of oil and then wax, is the finish I like for things that type. Good work.
