| | "Hajime Kuma-san" "Begin Mr. Bear!" Ha! Ha! Here we have a bear all geared up to spar! I made it for my grand daughter to give to her martial arts instructor as a Christmas gift. I've carved a number of these bears this year and like a couple of others that I've carved he or possibly she (who knows!) is made out of laminated empress wood pieces (from board breaking exercises) glued with Titebond and finished in acrylics with a satin Delta Ceramcoat Varnish topcoat. It stands at 9" high and 2-3/4 around the belly.

| | Re: "Hajime Kuma-san" Thank you one and all! Jim... I enjoy carving the empress wood and with the dojo (martial arts school) hosting black belt reviews and board breaking seminars three or four times a year there is a never ending supply. In fact, there is a hidden agenda behind this gift. My grand daughter's instructor gave me a bag full earlier this year thinking that all I was going to do with it was a little woodburing. When he sees what my real purpose in taking it for I'm hoping that he remembers me the next time they have a board breaking event. In the past we use to use 3/4" pine but #2 kiln dried pine can get pretty hard and we've had more than a few hand and ankle injuries from when the kids tried to break it. The empress wood, being shipped all the way from Taiwan, comes in 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" thicknesses and it's not as nearly as hard to break plus we can size the thickness to the ability of the breaker. After all, the purpose of the breaking is not to prove who's the toughest but who can demonstate the best technique.

| | Re: "Hajime Kuma-san" That empress wood is interesting! I've broken my share of pine, and re-breakable boards...the rebreakables hurt the most <GRIN>
Eddy...do you have any use for the broken bits of cinderblock and concrete I break now?
