Default Grizzly bear with basswood glue-up

I finished my first carving a month ago and I think I'm hooked. I was intrigued with Mark Yundt's glue-up techniques for his magnificent carvings. I thought I might give it a try on a much smaller scale. I used a pre-laminated basswood plank I bought at Rockler and cut out my bear pattern 3 times adjusting for the legs. I glued with Titebond II and clamped in stages. I was fairly pleased with the way the boards were glued together. The glue lines are fairly small. I'm not thrilled about the different color in the wood, but that is the result of the board I used. I plan on stippling a wood burned effect on the fur so maybe some of the discoloration will be able to be hidden. I am really having fun with this new hobby. I'm the father of 4 children under the age of 8 years old, so I don't have as much time to carve as I would like to. I'll take more photos when I start the wood burning process. Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

Matt

Great bear Sketch! I'm sure the burning will take care of the color differences. You've done a great job in your basic shaping and I'm really looking forward to your detailing and burning. Fun, isn't it!!!

HAAA! I'm so glad someone made use of my babbling! That looks great. The glue up is terrific,,nothing wrong there.Small scale,,bigger scale,,all the same,,just more of it.How big is this guy,,I'm guessing maybe 16 inches or so?? And I really like the "attitude" you've captured. It appears as though you've studied your subject well,,the bend in his paw,,the tilt of his head,,the shift in his shoulder blades,,it really looks as if he's just ambling along looking for some berries or something. Was just watching some T.V. show about bears,,and this looks just like what I saw them do as they wander around...excellent work and study....thanks for showing this.
