| | Re: greenwoman-wip ok, bigger step this time (i become afraid to bore you)... so, all leaves are now cut in, they are ready for detailing (though, i might recut those on her right side, they look too flat to me)... also worked on her face, trying to keep the whole carving in same state, so to say... still not happy with the structure of the face, yes maybe the cheekbones, dont know. need look more and get feel for what might be wrong... hope you enjoy |

| | Re: greenwoman-wip your carving is really taking shape Doris. Keep shaping the leaves as they are starting to come right off the carving giving your carving more depth. She has a nice smile forming. The chin and jaw are two of my biggest struggles in females as I tend to leave too much chin. If you are trying to work that area more, here is a basic tip from my instructor. Take your left hand and open it up with your thumb stretched out over the chin area and your fingers stretched together over the cheek bone area. Move your hand up and down and it gives you a good visual to determine how much more wood you need to remove from the chin and cheek area. Yours is looking fine so don't change a thing unless you want too.

| | Re: greenwoman-wip hello patrick. thanks for that basic tip. i collect all helpful information :-) ... yes, you are right, i think her chin is fine. .. i worked more on her, and think i found what bothers me, and started to correct it...
also, i think, from now on i need be "alone" with her. i mean, i have started to cut her features, and to me this is delicate (and still very difficult) work. i would like show you more steps, but i will postpone that to a later project when i feel more save (guess that is the wrong word, dont know how to express properly in english) with my work... so, i will show you next time, she will be finished...thank you all who joined in. it was great pleasure for me :-) |

| | Re: greenwoman-wip Hi Doris, she is coming along beautifully, I love the leaves and the beginning indications of flowers at the top of her head. Features are really nice and delicate as they should be with his subject. Keep up the good work!

| | Re: greenwoman-wip hi kathy, and hi chuck :-) ... i had such a great day carving today :-) i got me yesterday 3 (!) new chisels, i so long wanted have. two small ones for detailing work, or tight corners, and a huge one, i wanted to have for the roughing out. ah, all work terrific ! the small almost flat, a number 2, i really should have bought earlier. i do have a large number 2, but in small places it was difficult to work with it... ah, and that big one, its so much fun to use. i started roughing out the next project, and the chips fly like mad. FUN FUN, no digging out grand canyon with spoon anymore ! yippie, became almost high from carving today :-) |

She is coming along very well but I see what you mean, there is something not right , and I know too faces are so hard. But look into the mirror for your own face and see where there might be a problem. You had so much good advice here it is hard to top it LOL

| | Re: greenwoman-wip thanks, alice :-) ... yes mirror is my best friend. if i carve woman i, so far, use always myself as life model. makes things easier. not that i strive for likeliness, but just to see how things "are". |

| | Re: greenwoman-wip hello all :-)
greenwoman is finished, and, for those interested in seeing the development a few more steps, i like to show a few fotos which i had taken while working ...
the first shows essentially how i made changes in the leaves on her right side, to come back closer to the drawing, and put back that circular movement around her, as well i have pushed these leaves a little farther back, to make less flat... its not big changes, but gave me better feeling
the next is where i made some bigger changes on her face, the cheekarea was wrong, i shortend her chin considerably too... almost all details are cut, and her eyes, but not iris and pupil yet..
i knew i wanted have her look to her left, but thought is good to see the other options before carving in iris and pupil. so i made in photoshop some tests how she would look when looking into different directions.... made easy decision to me :-) | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
