i started this greenwoman some time ago, and then ran into a problem, and stoped carving on it... a few days ago, i looked again at her, and now i could see what was wrong. i had the planes of forehead, and cheeks tilted strongly to each other... it looked horrible, but i remembered, mark showed once a jesus carving, where he had carved accidentially the head too much looking down, and he showed a pic where we could see how he lifted it. i was so amazed that this was possible, and see how he did that from the progress pic, well. thank you mark, you made me able now to correct my fault, since i knew that you could do such... so, greenwoman is back on my workbench, and i am looking forward to lots of fun carving her... and, since i already learned so many things here on wci, i was thinking on how i could give back a little. i am not good in making carving tutorials, since i still too much to learn myself. but i thought, maybe you like watch me carving this greenwoman. not that i mean this as a step-by-step , but rather maybe some of you see something what you could make use of... thats at least why i enjoy so much looking wip carvings here ... i am a messy carver, as you can see from the first pic, and it looks maybe unorganised, but is not. i have drawings made, and do "see" how i want have her. i just let the situation some freedom to decide on how really goes...

have cut how (most) of the leaves should go, roughed in 2 of the flowers under her chin, maybe i put a third ther too, and started cutting away the boundary. the area under her chin should have some leaves too, but i already experiencd difficulty in moving the chisel there...well, will become interesting..main purpose is still to get the right feeling into it, the lines nicely, and the shpes interesting. nothing is really fixed until now... .i put the main drawing i use as a guide, but not as pattern. as you can see i changed my mind already on some things...

i have started to cut cleanly now, that is " wild exploring " phase is over, as i think i have found the essential shapes i want... from now on i try to cut as cleanly as i can ... i have worked on her face to build the foundation for the expression. eyes need be set deeper still... and everything is still just roughing out. ... comments welcome ... anyone enjoy this ?

I am following along Doris. Nice job so far. Looks like she'll turn out pretty nicely. One thing I was curious about. The drawing shows her head tilted a little to the right and turned slightly away. But your carving seems to be pretty straight on. I really like the pattern shown in the drawing and I was curious if this was what you were referring to in your initial post as have the planes incorrect? Or did you decide to carve her more straight on to simplify the carving? I am imagining that it would be pretty challenging to get a relief carved face to look right at an angle. ChuckT PS: Don't take this to mean that I don't like it the way you're doing it. I do. I was just curous. |

hi glad to know someone looks, i dont like be lonely ;-) ... chuckt, yes the head is rotated, also in carving, but not that much as in drawing...and yes, this was why i had so problem with the planes... the rotation is about 20 degree, i think, fotos not show that well, since i fotoed straight on... we will see how it turns out in the end, certainly not that strongly rotated as on drawing, but i wanted do a bit... i nver thought it were so difficult to carve rotated head, since i did already tilted, and that was ok...

She is looking good. Wish I could draw as well as you do. But I don't want to take the time from carving to practice |

ah, i am no good in hurry with carving, but sure will go on... joy, time spent for drawing pays back tremendously for carving. you get just a better knowledge how things really are, since you look different when you draw and carve, than when you just walk around and look. ...i draw every day (almost) and be it just a tiny drawing in evening before i go to bed...

Doris, thanks so much for taking the time to post pictures as you go. It's fun to watch a carving "come to life" that way. She's going to be beautiful!
