| | greenman - wip this is a little project on the side, i started today, and thought its a neat one to share as wip ... the design is inspired by a greenman of chris pye, though i not wanted go with the dreamy peaceful feeling his greenman has, but push it into a different direction, contrasting the circular shape, so to say... i dont know what kind of wood it is, maybe again jelutong ? its somewhat difficult to carve, since it is very crumply :-( and it is very dark, much more than the picture shows. pencil lines are hard to see on it. the size of the circle is 11.5 cm, so its a very small greenman to become... |

| | Re: greenman - wip Great design Doris! When you browse through the historical greenmen designs most were angry, disgusted or terrified! Very few had a soft pleasant face expression. I believe this comes because they were often used to show the horrors of a hellish afterlife to help keep the followers of the church faithful.
So in actuality your expression is much more in keeping with the greenman's nature.
It looks from the image that you are working in black walnut ... about 6" round???

| | Re: greenman - wip ah, i see... yes, the greenmen i have seen were mostly angry or terrified, now that you mention it, i recall that ... susan, the carving is smaller, the circle is only 4.5'' across |

| | Re: greenman - wip Doris, Chris Pye's Solar Greenman is a popular design. Mine is about 12" in diameter, carved in mahogany. I gave him a stare, but not a menacing stare. Nice work on yours; send a photo to Chris Pye. Mike |

| | Re: greenman - wip It's great that you started your Jack -in-the-green on Mayday. A significant day in the pre-Christian calendar. You might want to have a look at Directory Listing Denied.
All the best
