Hello everyone I am still waiting on my eyes for this owl. I decided to start the contouring on the chest feathers. Here are some pictures of the process. The first picture shows the difference between the contouring stage. The last picture is when the contouring is done. Come on I can't wait for the eyes! Sad </IMG>

Great detail carved on the owl! I know nothing about bird carving. You've carved yours without burning--so far. I am guessing you use micro tools for carving the detail. I see others burn the feather detail on their carving. Will you or do you burn at all? I personally have steered away from anything to do with wood burning. I prefer just to carve. If you can just carve the detail without burning, I may put bird carving on my list of things to try down the road. Thanks. |

This is really looking nice and looking forward to the next update. By the size of your hand it appears to be a nice size carving. Kathy

Thanks for the compliment, After I contour the head which is next, I will start burning in the flight feathers, then burn in all the details (All the marking's this owl has on its body). Then comes the painting. Burning is a necessity for me because it gives me more detail in my work which adds to the realism. Red Face bird carver

Thanks Kathy this owl is 11.0" long which is about half size of the real bird. I know it is much better to work on when it is smaller. But some times when a carving is too small it wants to slip out of your hands. bird carver (Rob)
