| | Re: Gothic chip carved cross Roger ,
I like it, but I think you have spoiled us. I don't know much about chip carving , but I think what really makes it stand up is the combination of the thn and thick lines. This one looks a little bulky if that makes sense. It doesn't seem to focus , like your others do. Maybe becuase the center doest give that central focus point.
Still it is a nice piece.

| | Re: Gothic chip carved cross I like the cross. You did get a gothic look. The only comment I have is that it needs a base so it is freestanding. It would really be an eye catcher that way rather than a wall hanging. The best of the Celtic and gothiic crosses I've seen have all been with bases. I LIKE IT!

| | Re: Gothic chip carved cross I am NOT a chip carver so please take what I say with a grain of salt and consider the source.
First, I think you did a beautiful job with it. The staining is very nice and makes the design really stand out.
I agree that the middle needs something on each side of the center. What I noticed was that you repeat the pattern on each distal point of the cross...except the bottom. Being in love with symmetry (which is why chip carving catches my eye), if I had carved it, I would have put the same pattern on each of the 4 points.
Remember, this is only the opinion of a wanna-be chip carver, so take it for what it is worth.

| | Re: Gothic chip carved cross Roger,
I went back to the picture and really studied it again. I think rather than carving something on each side of the center, enlarging the CENTER design would improve the asthetics a great deal and draw the eye to the center of the carving.
Just my honest opinion. Sorry if I've overstepped my boundaries. |

| | Re: Gothic chip carved cross I like AGAINSTTHEGRAIN am no chip carving expert. As a matter of fact, I was inpspired by you to try it, and bought some chip carving knives (though I have a long way to go). I do know a little about the gothic period though. I like the part at the foot of the cross- textbook gothic! but some of the shapes in the middle need a bit more circular shape or points. The trefoil or quatrafoil would be nice in the middle. I think the tracery would be impressive if you could pull that off with chip carving.
I gotta tell you what a huge admirer I am of that Lord's Prayer tapestry. |
