| | Re: Goody's new project Ash- The topper looks great. Can't wait to see the other 4 and the finished staff. I have some small peices of butternut but haven't carved any yet. How does it carve? It has a beautiful grain to it. Ron |

| | Re: Goody's new project Ron ,
I would say close to Basswood, maybe a bit softer. You can cave quick and deep. But of course like any of the softwoods, the detail is good , but has to be a bit larger than the harder woods. It shows every cutline, so overcuts will show up quickly, when finished.
Has a nice texture in your hand , and a yellow tint , which darkens as you work it. Knot holes are no issue as you can cut right through them.
And thanks Ron , should be quite nice, I have 3 of the other tops planned and layed out so should be fun. And a strang idea for the staff. Will keep you in picts =)

I now have only one problem, my wife saw it! She told me if it was going on a staff I had better bring the staff home ! Told her it wasn't finished yet and she said so "what are you doing here" !!!!!!!!!!
If they told me wood carving was going to mean slave labor , I would have looked for another hobby !!!
Hehe

| | Re: Goody's new project OUTSTANDING ash. Love the gain and color of butternut and yours looks great. Love the long hold trailing down also. Overall, a 10 for sure. It would be a shame to paint the topper with that beautuful grain and color! |

| | Re: Goody's new project Thank you Kenny. =) and I agree nothing on this staff will ever see paint, now I might use a bit of indgo ink on the third top, but I think you will understand why when you see it, it might be the most unique piece of all of them.

| | Re: Goody's new project Thanks Bandaid,
It is the first piece I have ever taken from a sq block, I used no pattern , and no power tools, all the wood was removed using knifes and gouges. And against all I have read , I did not use a Centerline or any drawing lines. I had a great time doing it.
Thanks , I hope the rest works out as well =)

| | Re: Goody's new project Heres the update,
What would a staff be without a couple of spirits to light the way? These are finished with a BLO rub.
Hope you like them .
