Default Glued up pieces

I dont have pictures and havent even started. I have a concept and wonder if anybody else out there has tried it. I have a bunch of pieces of cedar left over from other projects and I want to carve a scene by carving a piece and adding it onto the total piece. I am thinking deep relief. So instead of taking a thick piece and cutting into it, I would like to take a flat board and then add layers to it, making it a deep relief.

Any experiences?

I will start this weekend and post a pix when I have something to show.
