Claude... I'm with you. I was on a 144 ft coastal minesweeper with only myself and a 1st class signalman standing quartermaster/signalman of the watch duties so it was port and starboard. I always had to be on the bridge with the Navigator for stars. The signalman didn't know one end of the sextant from the other but then my flashing light and semaphore wasn't much better in comparison either! The watch that I took depended greatly on star time, the weather, and the mood of the navigator! Chow often took a back seat!

Thanks Dave!... As the quote goes, "Ah Shucks, It weren't nothin!" on both accounts! As for your Dad serving on the greyhound, have you looked up it's history and his service. Some of those ship histories make very interesting reading. If someone hasn't already posted a ship's history on line you can send away for one from the Naval Historical Center in Washington, D.C. They used to provide them for free but have since started charging for the research and copying fees. I don't believe that they are that expensive.

Vic... I assure you, any resemblance
to your boss was purely coincidental! Ha! Ha!

Marianne... To answer your question, no I haven't done any Marines but only because the opportunity hasn't presented itself. I did recently make one of my bears with a Marine logo on it for a wounded Vet. But you have put an idea in my head. I may have to try a carricature of a gunny in his dress blues. Thanks for the idea!

Curt...Thanks for posting. I've got one of those pictures myself from my first WestPac. I'm not sure how politically correct they are anymore! Ha! Ha! The same goes for you as I mentioned to Dave. Have you looked up your Dad's ship? It might make interesting reading?
