Default Getting around to posting again with a work in progress..

I guess everyone knows how fast life can come at you, well that has been my story for the past few months. Sorry I have not been posting as much as I would like. On the other hand I have managed to do a little carving. I took Lynn`s advise on this piece as I carved it with the tennon joint on the bottom. I am trying to capture Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson as he may have looked when he addressed the troops before the battle of Fredericksburg. This is one of the hardest beams that I have carved it is probably over 200 years old and of white oak. I still want to add a collar and a few buttons to the front of his uniform. As always comments or suggestions always welcome...Thanks Bruce

Bruce, I really cannot imagine coming up with such a fine carving with 200 year old white oak. At least not the 175 year old white oak beams that I have cut and ruined the saw blades on. I have found that most wood that old is either too soft or is 3/4ths the way towards being petrified.

Thats a fine carving.

That is a beautiful carving. It almost looks alive. Really striking, the texture and color of the wood and all that feeling in the face. Fantastic.

Hello Bruce,

That is one awesome carving. I've tried oak on a very limited basis and know how hard iit is. The realism of the face softens the wood and warm it up.

Very nice. Thank you.

Wow Bruce, that is an amaizing piece of work. The detail is so lifelike, I expect to hear his speach immediately. Carving that in a 200 year old piece of oak must have been a real challenge. 200 years is a lot of seasoning. What was it like to carve? Any impressions?
