Default Gargoyle Progress

I haven't posted the progress of how I am doing with the gargoyle...because I have made little progress. Anyway, here is the stage I am at now. I am starting to set his arms back closer to his body and start bringing out his shoulders. The head is roughed out and I am trying to find the ear on the back which is a challenge with his head turned. Proportion need to be looked at so I'll be shaving down his head once I start detailing. The wings make it hard to hollow out wood because of the angle I have to use my gouges. Shown is the picture next to he carving is what I drew to serve as a guide. Not an easy project I must say.
When I get stuck I go do another carving. I've done a number of these Mark Gargac woodspirits. People really like them so I'll be doing more. He's a little longer than my hand carved in basswood.
Patrick

hi patrick, yes the start is the most difficult, find the big shapes in the wood. i think you have the head and arms and knees pretty well spot on, now try find the back. i would not carve head, knees and arms tighter for now, since if you leave them like this, you have room to correct in case the back not fits perfectly, but thats your plan probably anyway...yes, turned heads seem so much more difficut, i know, but they are worth the effort...and you have them wings too...keep going :-) ...and nice you carve more faces when you got stuck, i like this oe too

Hi Patrick, It looks like you picked a good Challenging project. That's the way to become better at what you do. Will be watching with great interest on your progress. Merle

It's still going slow Vince. I'm doing other projects in between. This is not a project I can carry out like my other carvings. If I try to do it all at once, I'll get satified with the end result too early. Just when I thought I was done with one section, I go back and do some more. The relationship with the different body parts is causing me to go slowly so I keep everything in proportion. The wings are making it difficult to work with my tools so I'm using different gouges to reach areas normally done with specific tools. There is not enough progress to post any pictures yet but next week I should have an update posted.
Patrick
