| | flower panel - wip hi everybody, a new wip i like to share...
first a few words how this came to me : when i saw marks panels, i immediately had the idea, i would like to create a high book shelf for me, with the sides carved as panels similar to those he made ... i thought about the construction of a shelf, and that frightned me. then i went to look for wood, and seeing the large boards i needed for the side, i chickened out... sigh (maybe later, and this carving is a testdrive...) ...
now, this smaller panel, i carve for a shelf i already have, and the panel will be attached on one of its sides (the shelf is freestanding in the room as a "room separator")...so, i chose pine as wood, as that shelf is made of pine... the finish will be just varnish, since the shelf is finished that way. the color of the panel will soon adjust to the same orangy-gold my shelf has, i know ...
the panel is 1.8cm x 25cm x 80cm (that is 3/4'' x 10'' x 32'') ...after drawing the design on the wood, i feel a little timid, because the size is still so very big.... i bought a hand-jig-saw, and i hope my poor sawing skills will do for cutting out the holes, i also have another saw, which can carve small curves, i dont know the english name for that, it has a strong u-shaped frame, with about 27cm(about 11'') and at the end of the legs is attached a saw-blade which is very thin, and looks like a string , but that cant reach everywhere i need to saw... ... tips for how to saw good are more than welcome :-) ...
in the foto of the panel, i made the contrasts way higher in photoshop so that you can see the linedrawing on the wood...and for further help i added the original design drawing i developped... |

| | Re: flower panel - wip That would be a Coping saw. Take your time and try to leave the lines. You can carve or trim them later. Looks like a real nice design. Looking forward to seeing it as you progress through it.

| | Re: flower panel - wip Hi Doris,
The jigsaw might be too fierce for the delicate work you require it to do, I presume it is something like the Bosch GST75. The other saw, called a fretsaw, should be ideal. You drill a hole big enough to take the sawblade, through the area you want to cut out, then undo the top sawblade clamp from the top of the U frame and pass the blade through the hole. Then you refasten the blade at the top. Clamp the panel on a support so that it overhangs your bench and with a 270mm frame you should be able to reach most parts of the design. A supporting piece with a deep V cut in it might help to support your work if you need to make delicate cuts near the edge. When you have finished you will feel like investing in a Hegner variable speed fretsaw.
All the best

| | Re: flower panel - wip ah, coping saw is name, thanks :-) ... no, peter, my jig saw is not with motor, it is a handtool, a handle with a slim sawblade attached ...and therefore i thought i could use it where i canīt reach with the coping saw, since the u-legs, though they are 27cm are too short.... need go look up what fretsaw is in dictionary... |

Here's a photo. The one on the left is a Coping Saw, and the other two are both Fret Saws, one is called deep throat, and the other is called adjustable frame. Fret and Coping Saws - Woodcraft.com

| | Re: flower panel - wip I guess I am confused Doris. Is the panel a scroll saw pattern or a relief carving. I thought you were relief carving a panel but sounds like you are sawing the pattern. Just curious.

| | Re: flower panel - wip Hi Doris, I like the idea of a functional (relief?) carving, design looks really good and the design of the wood grain in the pine panel will enhance your design too.
Will be following along.

ron, the design is a flower within a frame, i first cut out with the fret saw the flower, and after that i will carve it to give it dimension. i mean i will carve the flower like i would carve a relief flower... so, when it is finished, it will look like a relief carving, but instead of a background there are holes, and you can look through... i hope you can imagine now, but please ask more if it is not well enough explained |
