Default Flat Plane In Progress

Here's a few pictures of an Ice Fisherman I'm doing from Harley Refsals book on Scandianavian Flat Plane Carving. It's one of those carvings that I like to set at the table and just whittle away at. With the 18 inches of snow we got this weekend I got a lot done on it.

Great job! I miss ice fishing, don't get to do a lot of that around here. But Georgia does have its advantages. Keep us posted on your progress.

Gergie, Great start. Please keep posting progress photos. I have several flat plane blanks ready to carve, but need a push to actually start. Hopefully, by watching your progress I can learn. Thanks Tom H

Looks very good! Can't say that I've ever done any ice fishing but in the movie "Grumpy Old Men" they sure made it look very fun!

It looks great. All he needs is a bucket to sit on and a pole. Looks just like me when we lived in MN and ice fished. LOL

I like what you have captured here..the pose is really good. The hunch of his shoulders is terrific. Another thing I noticed is the curve of his back. You have captured this quite well. One thing usually missed is transition from the back to the shoulders and then into the neck. Many usually miss the area between the shoulders and the neck and then the head sticks out unnaturally.Even though he is slumping or slouching the curves making up his back are right on.Regardless that this is a flat plane,,caricature carving,,it's well done because you have incorporated these features that make it all the more interesting....thanks for posting.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I still have a lot to learn on this style of carving. I'll keep you up on the progress. When i carve this I think of setting with my grandpa fishing on Lake Kampeska when it was very cold. Grandpa all hunched over to keep off the cold and us kids playing on the ice.
