| | First "TRY" at a realistic bust This is my first attempt at carving a face other than caricature.
I messed up the eyeballs,I left a little piece of wood inside the pupil but he was crosseyed so I just took it out .
It's basswood 9"x 5" I cut a 4x4 in half corner to corner.
I just ordered Jeff Phares book carving faces , so I hope my next will come out better.
But I think this one isn't bad.

| | Re: First "TRY" at a realistic bust "not bad" indeed, JB. It's very good! I like the way the eyes turned out. Are they painted black, or what?
I love the nice detail in the feather and the way it contrasts against the rougher texture of the hat. |

| | Re: First "TRY" at a realistic bust I painted the inside of the eyes black, and the leather straps burnt umber oil paint.

| | Re: First "TRY" at a realistic bust Your carving turned our very well. He has very good facial features. Is your feather carved separate and attached or part of the wood?

| | Re: First "TRY" at a realistic bust Thanks . I carved the feather seperate ,I figured it would probably get broken sometime or another , so it would be easier to replace. It's almost as thin as a real feather.

| | Re: First "TRY" at a realistic bust Hi Jonah, I'd say for your first attempt it's excellent. I just ordered two of Phares books "Carving the Human Face" and Carving Eyes". They look like goodums. Keep up the good work!
