That is a great bear bench really like the way you have the seat secured. I am in the process right now of doing four woodspirit benches for a customer. I am going to do a mortice and tennor joint to secure the seat but it is difficult to do with a bench that size. Again nice job is the entire bench oak or just the seat? Oak is nice to carve takes great detail but hard on the saw

| | Re: First try at a Bear Bench Colin, the bears are done in pine. Your right, the seat took forever to cut. Had to sharpen twice along the way.

I just started to use the Thomson's water seal on my bears. The Nutmeg brown tint does a good job on top of the burning. Now I will really have to head over to Colin's this week to collaborate on a few bears. He has a lot of good sized logs for carving and I have sharpened up all of my saws to be ready.

| | Re: First try at a Bear Bench Thank you Gene it was a lot of fun to do.
Bob, where do you buy the tint? I assume that you can buy tint in various colors (yellow, brown, green etc?)
Agian, thank you all for the input. If I had to do it over again I would have made sure the joint between the seat and the bear was tighter. I did run a 6" 1/2" lag bolt down into the seat. The bold is between the hands and the body. I put a wood plug back on top so that it is nearly invisible.

| | Re: First try at a Bear Bench Greg, I picked it up in Lion's Head, Ontario at a Pro Hardware store.
I looked today when I was in a canadian Tire store and they had some there. Not sure what other colours it comes in.
Keep up the good work. Chainsaw carving is great, no need for the bifocals anymore.
