| | Re: first relief carving.....man that's a change!! Don't sell yourself short you did a great job. My guess is your step son will love it. I'm the first one to look at my carvings and see all the mistakes, where other people look at my carvings and see all the good. My guess that baby will be on Antiques Roadshow in a hundred years and be worth a Million (I'm figuring in inflation) dollars.

I think he will be very please. If I were to make a suggestion, and if you have the wood, I would suggest you build a bit of a background to balance the carving.
I would go to the left side and add a large tree going up the left side in a very light relief. It would add distance to the carving and offset the heavy right carving and move you from being instantly focused on the antler joint and move you to the face of the buck.
But you did a nice job for a first relief.

| | Re: first relief carving.....man that's a change!! Without a doubt I think that he'll love this personal carving from you... and an 8 pointer at that! This is about the only way that I'll ever get one hanging on the wall.
Relief carving is not my specialty either but I regularly go there because I believe leaving the comfort zone is the best method for improving as an overall good carver.
Thanks for sharing! |

Real nice for the first attempt. We are our worst critics.
If I was to do a relief carving of any 8 pointers I came accross, I would have to carve the part that goes over the fence last. Thats the sight I usually got as they jumped the string!

Ash has a great suggestion but I wouldn't go back on this one but would incoroperate a tree in the next one for sure.
