Default First Object ever

Hi everyone
Here is my first project .I bought the wood over at wal mart. And a X-Acto knife.I call the guy Gene after one of the guys on the site that i been PMing. He was supposed to be done in flat plane style. But he didn't,t turn out just right. The wood was not wide enough to carve his arms right i wanted to bring them out from the body more the block was 1"x2".I have a question why is the wood turning dark.I keep my hands clean while i am carving.

But i do thank you all for your help.
Vic

No photos showed up, Vic - you'll need to try again. The oils from "clean" hands will darken the wood.
