| | First carving finished. Please criticize! This is my "first" carving I have done. I say "first" because In the past I have carved wooden knives and non-decorative spoons. but those were easy compared to this lol. Anyways please criticize my work. I realize there isn't much there, but any tips I can do to improve? My next work is going to be TomH's 5 min. wizard! talk about fun!
Anyways for me, criticisms help, while compliments hinder!
EDIT: Oh yeah, This was done using only my 3 blade pocket knife. It would have been nice to use a gouge on this project. lol!
-Thanks, Jason Gouge.jpg

| | Re: First carving finished. Please criticize! That looks horrible - what were you thinking? Doesn't look like a hammer at all!!! ;-) (Well - you asked for it didn't you?) Heh heh . . . <evil grin & laugh>
Seriously . . . kinda neat first carving. I don't recall seeing anyone carving a carving tool as their first carving. Nice job Jason. The only thing I'd have maybe done differently would be to round the handle a little more. Neat idea. Keep carving!!

| | Re: First carving finished. Please criticize! I have only three comments - not really criticisms, just the way I would have carved this piece. first, I would have made the silver portion of the "V" tool a little longer, even if I had to reduce the size of the handle portion. Second, I would have sanded, at least the silver portion, really smooth so that it looks more like metal. Third, I would not have painted the handle quite so dark.
Certainly this is an excellent start to a woodcarving career and especially when it was carved with a pocket knife. I have tried this and find them a pain. A pain to sharpen and most of them are painful to the hand after a period of carving.
My only real critique is a recommendation and that is to get a good set of tools. |

| | Re: First carving finished. Please criticize! Hey that is a cool little carving. Neat idea... Key chain? I saw your post on saving up for a new carving knife. I suggest the beginners set from Little Shavers when you can swing it. In the meantime your pocket knife will do just fine. Folks have been whittling with them for ages and you have no trouble sharpening them from what I read previously. Tom Wolfe has been using pocket knives for carving for years and still uses them with his other traditional carving knives. Have fun and keep them coming. Oh.. I think it would have looked a little better with a brown handle vs. the dark one. but you did good! Good luck with Tom's wizard. It's a fun project and I am sure Tom will be glad to help with any problems.

| | Re: First carving finished. Please criticize! What a delightful carving.
I wouldn't have come up with any criticism myself, as I just kind of accepted it the way it is, but I like the suggestions from Paul.
Fun to see.

Nive little carving. Must be difficult to keep it sharp. Seriously, you could use it when you start making clay models of your carving projects. |

| | Re: First carving finished. Please criticize! Jason .. Criticism isnt always necessary for beginners work to help them do better ... You did a good job on a first project and you should be commended for it ..
Next time though .. kind of tone down on the paint a little bit and make it more a wash .. but the carving is very good .. the handle is a little short and at first I though it was a key .. but for your first .. you should be proud ..
