Outstanding carving especially for your first one. Here is a tip trying carving cherry wood when it is green you will like it much better carves like butter.

That's your first effort? Ni-iiicccee!

As others have noted, carve cherry and any other fruitwood when it is green. Once it dries, it gets tough as nails.

Isn't amazing how one day everything just seems to "click", and you have the enthusiasm, time, patience, wood, subject matter, and permission from the significant other to produce that first real carving? Youv'e done a wonderful job, and now for the hardest thing that you will ever do: producing an even better second effort...
