Default First carving!

Hey guy's, here is my first carving (second ever). It's certainly not a Trygg, but i had fun! Having trouble getting a clean cut, but i guess using a utility knife and a exalto blade doesn't help!

It looks a lot better than my first. You got everything rounded well and sticking out like it should. I'm guessing using pine was probably causing you the most problems! You need to get you a bit of basswood! I use a utility knife quite a bit, but have no experience with the Exacto blades. Maybe get you a detail knife and a couple of small gouges...you got the talent!

That is pretty darned good. From the grain it looks like a pine 2x2 so it wasn't that easy to carve. keep it up

Hey, good job! You should be able to get nice clean cuts with an exacto blade, they are really sharp. If you didn't use Basswood when you can get some...I think you will find it's a super wood to carve.

Very well done. Basswood is so much easier to carve than Pine. Believe me I know. I tried pine too. As for the X-acto knife, I fine there is nothing wrong with using them. I would suggest that you use the # 2 blade. They are great for detail carving . But I'm a fairly new carver 7 months , so I'm no expert. Again very well done. Keep it up . You will get Hooked like the rest of us. GinnytooU

Absolutely wonderful job for your first. I agree with the general opinion on Pine - while a few carvers do an extremely fantastic job with it, I have carved in it a couple of times and find it to be a pain in the rear end. Try getting your hands on some Basswood - about the best wood for beginners.
