Default First attempt at carving

This is piece of oak from a tree cut down in my backyard. It is my first attempt at carving something and I do not draw. It is what came from the wood, no plan used.

Pretty cool! It has kind of a mask -like quality to it. Glad I can't see the eye part very well...afraid of what might be looking back at me! Very good!

Thanks all. Carving surely is an adventure. You start off and think to yourself, no way is this going to work. You gouge out a couple of pieces and think, ok, it kind of looks like a face. You work some more and think, ah, now I see it. Then, right when you think youi know what it is going to look like. either you make a mistake, a piece of wood splits, or you have to digg deeper for dimension. Then you have no idea again what it is going to look like. The tough part for sure is stopping and letting it be. I could of ended up with a miniture if I would have kept going. Best of all, I learned a bit on how to use the tools. Definitely worth giving it a go to see what happens. Yea, I have about 5 or 6 scroll saw projects that i have done. I have been working with wood since September 08. Before that, I never even thought of it.
