Default firat walking stick

here are some pictures of my first walking stick

the wood is maple
this stick started out as my first attempt at a woodspirt walking stick, and practice with a wood burner.

then I decided to try some nature scenes on it .

I have room for a couple more pictures and then its time to seal it

my next stick will be all nature scenes that kind of blend or flow together if that makes sense (a mixture of carving and burning)

thanks for looking and any opinions on stain or sealing would be appreciated

You've got some cool elements there, and I like your idea of an integrated series of scenes from nature. Just a suggestion.....maple is a darn hard wood to carve, but takes burns really well. If you plan to use maple for the next one try just using burns. If you want to do some carving, I'd suggest aspen, diamond willow, box elder, or balsam. Balsam is pretty gooey if you try to carve it green, but staff sized sticks dry up well and are still reasonably easy to carve.

Nice staff stickman. You should call it a story stick as it has many illustrations that would make a great story.

thanks everybody for your kind words

I didn't think maple was very hard to carve maybe I used a type that isn't so hard? (there are a pile of different maples I wonder if there hardness varies)

Or I don't have enough experience to know the difference.

I like the idea of a story staff!

thanks again for your coments. Mike
