Ron, What part of curves do you find difficult? Getting the lines smooth while using a chisel (knife) when making the lines to follow, making the stop cuts,,shearing the sides? Since you mentioned it,,I just had to ask.
It's an important detail since it adds to the cleanliness of a carving.
There are times when trying to follow a line with your chisel to keep each cut in the same path to make it look like one continuous line without it becoming segmented. If the line gets broken,,or overlapped cuts are made this can present some problems.
This is only a guess. Let me know. If you like I can show you what seems to work for me or offer suggestions. I only mention this 'cause it used to drive me nuts till I figured it out.

Great job Mark! I can see the template and the router definitely saved you a lot of time. You should start writing down all your ideas that are timesavers and put them into a book. It might not be a bestseller, but for carvers, it would be invaluable.

Mark, what sort of a cutter or bit did you use with your micro-motor?

Mark: I don't know about Ron's answer, but I'd like to hear how you do the curves with your gouges, particularly a curve with a varying radius, such as the four "corner stems", if you have the time.

Thanks,
Claude

Bob,,they might save me time,,but who would want to read it? Might serve to put you to sleep!

Ron,,it was the smallest micro burr I had. It was smaller than the 3/32 shaft. Sixteenth maybe? Tough to control the tiny ones,,they tend to dig in fast so I hesitated to get too close. Mess one of these up and it's hard to fix. Especially when I only have the finished panels,no room for error ,only one chance to get it right,,,and many chances to get it wrong.

Claude,,I'll see what I can do for you.

Beautiful job on the panels Mark. I never get bored looking at great carving! You make it look so easy. Well done.

Hey Mark - thanks for sharing your wonderful posts as always. I am trying to get caught up on the board. Was away with the family for a long weekend Labor Day (Th - Mon) in the Berkshires, and now I am tied up every evening through the end of the month with rehearsals for a community theater production of Mame. So Sept looks like a wash for me and carving other than some 5 minute wizards. I hope to get to work on a greenman on one of the pieces you gave me in Oct though. I'll post WIP and be asking for advice I'm sure.

However, in the meantime I LOVE following along on your threads and gleaning all I can. Beautiful work as always.

Cheers
ChuckT
