Default finished box

This is the box I asked for help with the design problems I was having. The design had to spread out further and be more in proportion to the box size in order to give the Viking ship and dolphins more room.. It is finished except for the hand rubbed wax finish that I will do in the next few days.

I am glad it's over, and I think I might be done with carving pine. It took the finish really badly. I used oak minwax stain, and it has a lot of grey in it. Tung oil or linseed oil is much more forgiving of my rough edges. Now I am very glad that I didn't charge that much for it.
This is one of those feelings you get when you're really anxious to get onto the next carving and forget the one you just finished.

Thor, That box turned out real nice. I agree about the pine, but the work you put into the finish really paid off. It looks super. And I know the box will be appreciated....Tom H

Don't give up on pine.....it is notorious for taking stain poorly (splotching) but your box looks like it came out just fine. You might try using a pre-stain treatment before you stain pine. Maple and birch are two other woods that tend to splotch, as is basswood and aspen.

Cabot, Minwax and Varathane all make compatible pre stain treatments. They all work well.

No blowing smoke here Thor, that box turned out really nice! As far as the "splotching", I've had good results using shellac first on woods like pine, cherry etc.

Thor,

Congratulations, the box turned out great. Finishing can be a chore on Pine, but it looks good. That design works well!
