Reg...The designs are traditional Celtic designs, and come from a book on Celtic designs ("The Crafters Design Library, Celtic", by Chris Down) and our own Susan Irish's Celtic design CD, and the original one from the article in Carving Magazine by Donna Menkie.
They are just carved on one side, any wood will do, but some better than others. I put the design onto a board about 3/8" thick, cut out on a scrollsaw, then just shaped or rounded using first a knife, then diamond files and finally sandpaper or sanding sticks. Harder woods you can shape using power.....ie: Foredom. But eventually you have to sand, and sand and sand.
As for uses....who knows! Some are nice as necklaces on a leather thong. Some look nice glued to cabinets, doors, chests or furnature. You name it, I suppose, they just look nice to me and I enjoy carving them. They also look nice just as a decoration hung from the tree at Christmas or laying on a small pillow as an art display. You can do some pretty intricate designs, and each is different and poses a unique challenge. The first I ever did was a cross my daughter designed. I wonder what ever happened to that, hummm?
I find an couple of coats of oil followed in a couple of days with some wax, well rubbed, gives the nicest feel and finish! Warm!

Step one, un-bury the scroll saw... |

| | Re: A few Celtic Knots Hi, Nice work.
I found out that drawing the celtic knots was harder than the carving part. My wife is part Irish, wanted me to carve her an Irish Cladagh.
