It looks really great to me, John. I've never heard of babine, but sure like the grain and the look you've got here.

Here are a couple of photos the finished carving. I used 1 coat tung oil and one coat of Watco Satin Wax (dark).

I was attracted to this bark because the outer color of the bark is white and quite attractive. I'm working on another piece now. it is definitely softer that the Walnut and Cherry that I perfer, but does not hold detail as well.

I bought this bark from Smokey Mountain Woodcarves Supply (Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers). I cannot remember where Mac said it comes from. Google for "Babine tree" or "Babine bark" doen't yeild anything useful. It does tell me that in British Columbia the re is:a Babine River; a Lake Babine; a Babine Lodge; and a area referred to as Babine.

I was at Woodcraft yesterday and the guy working there showed me some wood that he said was cottonwood bark and it came from Smokey Mountain Woodcarvers. He said that Mac had showed him a new supply had just come in. When I picked it up and looked on the back of it, it said "babine bark". Now I have never carved Cottonwood bark but that what it said on the back...

The store banner says they recently received a load of cottonwood bark from Canada. If there is a Babine region in BC, then perhaps the shipment was cottonwood bark from BC in that region...
