| From the book, Carving western figures, Sheriff, p36 Carving is done real close to the Enlow pattern except the detachable head (and gun slung on left side), the single block grain structure just wouldn't support the legs and the hat brim being so thin.. so separate head/hat was turned 90 degrees in the same block, i still dont know why i got a wood color change on the head? any comments welcomedetails in photo dont all show up as im pretty bad photographer with this digital thing, more photos at this LINK i plan to make metal buckles and a badge but dont know the style to go with this big brimmed tex-mex hat,, carving is basswood 7-1/4"tall x 2"wide ![]()

Excellent work, Thomas! For the painting, I'd suggest a very thin wash only where you really want some color. Your carving is too good to cover up... For the camera, look and see if it has a "macro" setting for closeups. This will allow it to focus really close in. Also, look to see if the camera has a "half-squeeze" position on the shutter. As you slowly press the shutter, you'll see a little square appear in the viewfinder right in the center. What is in this square is what the camera is focusing on. For example, if you have two figures and the little square is showing the background between the two, both will be out of focus when you finish squeezing the shutter. Squeeze to the halfway point while aiming at one of the figures, then turn the camera slightly while holding the half-squeeze position to include both figures, and then finish squeezing and they'll both be in focus. Also, the more light, the better - or else use a tripod, so you don't move the camera slightly while the shutter is open... Claude Last edited by Claude; 07-05-2008 at 06:39 PM. |

Hey Thomas, Really a good carving there. And I agree with Claude! A thin wash of very subdued color. May even consider leaving the skin unpainted. Tom H |

Claude, its got a micro 8 to 18" focus plane, the speed of the shutter is controlled by the asa film you tell it to use, it dont have a lot of bells and whistles like a basic 35mm camera, the pictures i took are pushing the technology of this cheap made bottom of the line kodak camera... Quote:
then im sure ill have an attitude, yes the carvings expression is very serious and stern, hope it makes it through the next stages ... Quote:
i couldnt find any examples of the big brim, tex-mex hat, style of vest or badge, was hoping for some authentic connection, maybe i need to look up tex ridder and audy murphy?

What a great looking carving Thomas .. Thats a old enlow pattern and you really brought it to life .. Are you going to paint it or leave it natural ? I really like the way you did the arms .. you did a great job on them .. A 10.0 + for sure .. Gene
