| | Eagle cane, continued Well, since I posted the roughed cane on the week-end, I may as well post progress shots. Been working on shaping and smoothing the beak and getting into feathers. Feathers are my biggest challenge, but I think I've got my head around the lay of them now. Almost time to start burning, but have to do the eyes yet.
All pointers/comments/critiques greatly appreciated.

| | Re: Eagle cane, continued Bob,
Very good carving, I like your idea of showing the bits you used. Is it a decorative cane or one for use?
Coincidentally, I'm also working on a cane with an eagle head, either a bald eagle or a golden eagle depending on the paint, staining is also a possibilty. The shaft is oak and the head is bass.
I can't post pics as I don't have a digital camera, but will post when completed.

| | Re: Eagle cane, continued Nice cane head Bob. Are you going to paint it or leave it natural. By the look of the plans I would guess that you are going to paint at least part of the cane.

Wow, I am not sure whihc I like more the carving or the drawing your working from.
The drawing remnds me of the old ship buildier drawings from the 1700"s .
Nice nice work !

| | Re: Eagle cane, continued The wood is Mahogany, cut from a board, I seldom use branch or sticks, but shape the wood. Worked on the smaller head feathers last night more, shaped the eye sockets and inserted the eyes.
The burrs are all of the ones I've used in this process, and included them as a reminder to myself of the steps I used to achieve the resulting feathers. Still have some work to do on defining the larger groups and feathers, but it is an improvement over the first cane. I think.
I've been checking out/comparing different "how to" articles, especially the Issue 34 one, and the new Bald Eagle Illustrated Book, looking at photos of real Eagles. I feel more comfortable developing my own style of how to "interpret" fearthers, cause I see them differently than the articles writers.
I'll be painting this one, though I am tempted to just clear finish, the customer wants it painted. Not sure what I'll use for the shaft yet (kind of wood), or if round or hex shaped?
It's coming. Thanks for the comments folks, and nice staff Dave.
