| | Re: Eagle cane and rudder. Bob- i like your eagle cane, actually i like both of your canes the eagle and the dragon.i like the way you have incorporated the handle and the carving in one piece.i have been hesitant to carve canes because of the reliability of the strenth of handle and shaft.
how do you join both parts together.

| | Re: Eagle cane and rudder. Frank...the head is attached to the shaft by drilling and dowelling matching holes and using yellow Carpenters glue (Indoor/Outdoor). The dowels are 1/2" so they are thick and strong enough and the glue forms a great bond. I use the canes myself, so I trust them to stay secure.
Lindy....thanks , I hope he enjoys the pictures.

| | Re: Eagle cane and rudder. Just so you get to see the final results. Added a spacer to accent the joint instead of trying to hide it, using a dark wood, and taper the head to the shaft. Turned out the wood was Walnut too, so it worked. Very light and comfortable cane to walk with.

Is carving a nice break from the ship building carvings you do? I'd think so, I can't even imagine doing something as intricate and involved as them!! You are a very talented (and patient!) man! Deborah | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
