| | Re: Dream Commission That is quite the project. Have you carved spanish cedar?
It is softer than mahogany but looks very similar and half the price I get it for about 3.50 a board foot. |

| | Re: Dream Commission Now that is an ambitious project what kind of time span are you looking at from start to finish. I agree they would be a lot nicer in hard wood maybe even Walnut but of course you are going to have to pay huge bucks for the slabs. Good luck and keep us posted.

| | Dream Commission - First Model in done It has been awhile since I posted anything. But I also did not get started on the models as fast as I thought I would. I have inserted a picture below of the final model. If you want to see a progression of the modelling you can go to http://www.rtmi.org/narthex
then click on Rahab tab.
The model is full scale and at it's deepest point is over 8" and is 40" x 40" |

Thank you for the step by step. Most of us will never be able to study in Europe or under a master carver's studio. This will not only help us appreciate the skill and time going into projects like this, but give us some insight as to how it's done.
Humbly,

| | Re: Dream Commission It will probably be awhile before I start carving. this model is going to be displayed at church so everyone can see the scale of the project. The next step is to do the rest of the models in half scale.
I have decided to use Honduran Mahogany for a couple of reasons. There is less movement in Mahogany once it is cured, very important for something that is going to require a lot of glue up. And two Mahogany it beautiful all on its own. The extra cost of the wood is worth it. I will save time on finishing, everyone has heard of Mahogany so no "selling" required and did I mention that it is beautiful?
If anyone wants to be added to the mailing list for when I do updates on the web site, send me a note and I will add you. I need to fix the subscribe on the web site it is saving the name but not the email address. There is always something. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
