| | Dragon cane progress I am seperating the dragon cane part of another thread, so those who may be interested can find it easier. This dragon cane is carved in Cherry, and I am using bith power and edge tool on it. The head is attached to the shaft by a 3/4" dowel and an extra piece is added to the front of the shaft to give more room for chest scales. The design is my own, but is certainly influenced by Susan's great book of Dragons.
The general shape of the head is roughed out and the chest and neck scales are in place but will require detailing. I still haven't settled on the scale design for the head, but have some ideas. Any one care to make a suggestion?

| | Re: Dragon cane progress Bob, as usual that is absolutely beautiful! It looks like the grain on the head almost has a scale shape within it.
Nice job and thank you for sharing.

| | Re: Dragon cane progress Bob, that is an excellent job you are doing. I have a cane that I will post as soon as I can get a photo made of it. Camera-not! Scanner-not! Old computer that came over on the Mayflower-yep! Mine is a monkey from top to bottom. One of my daughters has laid claim to it! "Dad that's mine when you kick off and you had better tell the rest of them" Ha! S/F pogerope |

| | Re: Dragon cane progress bob,
no suggestions, but a question on how to attach the handle.
i have a couple sections of what im told is china berry wood shaft.
i have carved a little on them and burned a little on em as taking the natural knots and seeing gnomes and wizards in the knots. developing them,
i decided one with a dragon head as handle, and not decided what to put on the other yet. maybe a brass knob
the shafts are a little heavy 1 1/2" in size already. but to decrease the size of them would be a lot of wasted work.
on the dragon head i wanted to try for as much support as i could get to make the dragon head like the shape of a 7 so it ran down the shaft a little for more support and in the 7's shape handle, long leg running down from the handle would blend into the scales on the back of the neck, i already have carved in that cane.. but orientation of handle grain was driving me nuts.
im using Honduras mahogany handle on to this thing because the natural cinnamon color match. and i have it on hand.
i like the tenon style fastening joint idea for strength using a hole saw to make the tenon on the shaft, and a forsner bit for the socket.. just don't know if this will be a good idea or not
being this is my first 2 piece cane,,
any suggestions? |

| | Re: Dragon cane progress Thomp ...... I have not tried tendon and socket on my canes, I use a 3/4" dowel and carpenter glue. It creates a great tight bond and ends up as strong as solid wood, and completely enclosed. I think that a tendon might work loose over time, like a chair leg. But that's just an opinion.
Got the detail sketched out for the head and just have to get to work on it.
