| | Draggin my dragon :) Finally got the nerve to try a dragon. One of Shawn Cipa's from his book on Carving legendary figures.
I didn't want to cross any copyright lines, so I simply read and re-read the relevant chapter while I had my hands on the book - I had to borrow it through the inter-library deal - and never thought to make more than the one xerox of one side of the pattern. Silly Whitecree!
So, I have it largely roughed out, kind of rough yet, the wings haven't been seperated and I won't do that part until all the rest of the rough stuff is done. Some the rounding has been started, but what I'm not too certain about is the head. Is it too wide for this figure?
Have a look at the attachments if you would, and tell me what you think. I don't intend to make a career out of dragon carving, but it would be nice to get this one looking reasonably nice, so criticize away. |

| | Re: Draggin my dragon :) What Kind of wood are you using on that whitecree and what are you using to remove it. I can't find any critique points. As far as careers go....It's been over a year and I still haven't finished mine. Even a small one makes a pile of chips. ...good for mulch

| | Re: Draggin my dragon :) I'm using yellow cedar, a couple of knives and a couple of palm gouges I bought from Rick. So far, no power tools except the bandsaw to cut the blank.
I'm mostly worried about the width of the head and face. Too wide, and it will look more like a bear's head, rather than a serpent which is what most dragons were based on. |

| | Re: Draggin my dragon :) The shape looks good Whitecree, better to have extra, than not enough for when you get into detailing. The body shape looks good too, nice proportions. Concentrate on getting a shape/contour you are happy with before beginning any scales, it will be much more satisfying in the end. For head shape, think alligator or crocodile or even a T-Rex.

| | Re: Draggin my dragon :) For a small carving, it looks more complicated then I would have expected from the two dimension pictures I have seen of this dragon. Keep sharing your progress as I'm curious as to how it takes shape.
