Don't worry Cliff, it's a wonder what can be done with wood these days, lol. I think he looks like a winner though, already!

If n it were me-I would make his arms in 2 sections. Angled at shoulder and elbow...maybe even 3 places? at the wrist? He's fantastic as he is actually. In my mind, I can see him with his pole at his feet and just shirt sleeves dangling. , but a profound fisherman. This carving really evoked my imagination...
...went away as a boy ... came home as a man...all he wants to do is fish. No arms...Good gawd I am depressing my self...great carving...I like the 2 parter legs...looks like he is in waders. Great work. I'll shut up now...

I think it's a tribute to his tenacity...he fished 'til his arms fell off!

Keep at it and he'll turn out great.

cliff,

cut back the shoulders to a good flat spot, you may get into the chest some on this figure
shape the arms but leave extra material bulk at the joint to carve back after its all glued up,to make a seamless joint, drill the holes and pin in place, look at best position, and figure where to stop carving the arm to leave enough flat to match the body shape,
"if you carve off too much it will make the arm at this joint look like a balloon animals joints"

hope i didn't confuse you too much.

yep, cut'em off.....at the shoulder like Bob said where the seam would be on your shirt where the sleeves are attached, its easy to add arms there and to blend in, cut the arms just slightly bigger than the torso so you can trim them to the shoulders and have nice clean cuts ...

Hey guys, I've got them roughed out, now I gotta figure out the final carving for shape etc. it's gonna be tricky for me at this stage but I've put a lot of time in on this guy and I'm determined to take it to the finish, thanks again for all the tips, the arms are clean off at the shoulders.

Cliff...Just a suggestion but don't carve the upper are where it attaches to the body until it's attached. That way you can carve the two pieces together to where they don't show.
