| | Door knockers and such with all the positive reinforcement, and i thank you all, i now feel inclined to post some more of my carvings.
The pics are in order of finishing. Except for the character carving, it was one of my first, all the rest are door knockers.
One more thing i'd like to say about this site. This is one of the most positive forums i've ever been in. Some of the others i've tryed to particapate in gave you no feed back what so ever, and others didn't want you to know thier secrets of the "how to".
I've gotten good feed back from friends and family but coming from you all is the best i can get, I mean heck, your piers are you best critics and the good words coming from vets in the field are the best.
Again i want to thank each and ever one of you that critic my work.
Thank you
Michael Gray

| | Re: Door knockers and such Nice job graywolf71, I really like your wood spirits. I take it that you are using the knife shown in the picture? Only used chisels so I am not familiar with the pocket/carving knife, but you are getting great results with your knife What kind of wood are you carving and is it green or dry?

| | Re: Door knockers and such Whatsthat,
I use only found wood and as far as type, you got me. I'm no good on typing wood by bark.
The one's i know of are the black one, which is a bad staining job, is pin cherry and the latest one is silver maple from one of the trees i lost during a storm.
I have some Harry lauder walking stick limbs, which are straight, that a friend gave me. I'll post pics on that when complete.
Most of the wood i find on walks is green or half green when i get it and i try to carve it that way. The limbs i have harden to concret and is near impossiable to carve with my knife, no matter how sharpe.
The knife as Ash said is a carving jack by flexcut and one of the most wonderful tools i own. They come with a stroping block and gold compound. They retail for about $125 at Woodcraft stores, i think that's the price. It was a christmas present from my wife and daughter so i'm not too privy to the total cost.
Hope that helps.
